A sign is a gesture, action, notice, or object used to convey information or instructions. In communication and semiotics, a sign is anything that communicates a meaning that is not the sign itself to the interpreter of the sign. Signs can include words, gestures, images, sounds, or even objects and URLs—anything that conveys meaning beyond itself. For example, traffic signs regulate traffic and direct drivers' behavior, while business signs promote recognition and differentiate brands. Additionally, a nod of the head is a universally understood sign for consensus or agreement.
